relishing in some brunch!

brunch. the meal defined as the combination of breakfast and lunch...and is most cases, quite a heavy meal to take the place of both breakfast and lunch. i love brunch, as it gives one the opportunity to truly indulge without having to worry too much about over eating (since you do  have two meals worth of calories at your disposal!), and it does in its own magical way, give the weekend that special holiday feel to it. its been a while since i actually had brunch, especially with g now down under in jdk, so it was kind of a nice treat that the entire family headed over to relish for a quick brunch getaway.

coffee & cake

i really don't quite care what everyone says, but oriole cafe still serves up the meanest latte on this island. serving up quality 'honest' coffee, the baristas at oriole take no short cut in the brew process. all creations start with freshly roasted beans that are only ground on demand, tampered twice and then brewed with water at the right temperature for the perfect duration of time to yield the basic yet very awesome building block of any coffee creation - the espresso.

'work hard. live well.' - arbite

inspired by the german slash danish word for work (arbeit/arbejde), a group of schoolmates decided to come together, take the very bold step and transform their passion for food into their work. and so saw the birth of the new kid on the block at serangoon gardens  - arbite. to be honest, i have always wanted to embark on a similar adventure....yes, there has always been dreams of opening my very own cafe serving kick ass coffee, delish desserts and yummy ice cream, of course all in a nicely decked out modern yet homely corner...but the reality of the endeavor and acknowledgement of my very 'cannot make it' business mind, keeps me in my day job but yet oddly spurs me on to venture into other people's dreams and try to be a part of it by blogging about them here at mojitos. i was hence very glad that i got invited over to arbite by a good friend b, who is friends with the brains behind the joint, for some dinner and catch up time.

hot off & out of the pan!

situated surrounding the main fountain feature of raffles city's basement, i am pretty sure many have passed by out of the pan and have probably either consciously or subconsciously peered up or down (depending on where you were headed!) from the escalators at the people eating. i've dined at out of the pan before...but that was a good two years or so back and instead of having the crepes which is the specialty of the place, i had waffles with ice cream instead. i remember i wasn't too impressed with the waffles so i kinda wasn't expecting too much from the crepe lunch we had last weekend.

lady marmalade!

the marmalade pantry is probably one of the first places to have managed to piece together the critical components and achieve an almost perfect cafe equation. the formula is simple, but getting the decor and vibe to equate, food and drink to equilibrate is really quite an art. having been in the cafe business since 1999, the marmalade group has definitely gotten good at what they do. starting off being known to serve up some kick ass cupcakes (they definitely had a huge role to play in educating singaporeans what good cupcakes are!), they've definitely increased their repertoire and set up shop in some really nice nooks on the island.

brunch at district ten

been kinda caught up with things over the past couple of weeks, and thought it's high time i took a couple of steps back, regroup and refocus on things that i love doing (mojitos being one of them!). and it being a sunday today, i figured it'd be nice to share with all a somewhat recently discovered brunch place - the district 10 bistro.

'gone fishing!'

now that's the sign you get if you ever try to head to charlie's corner on a monday...and also a huge clue to the chilled laid back vibe the place and crew exude at this corner part street cafe, part pub joint! the place definitely brings back memories from way back when pak law would bring the whole family up to changi village and my sis and i would literally go wild for their awesome fish and chips and fresh fruit juices served up in frozen mugs with the signature slab of ice at the bottom of each mug!

recess anytime at the canteen!

next to restaurant les amis, the canteen is probably the most established outlet living along the flanks of shaw centre. having passed by the place several times heading to yoga, this girl made many mental notes to check the place out, especially after seeing yummy pictures of local inspired grub and the clean open concept of the place.

time to rise and dine?

all day breakfast, everyday. with choices of eggs done scrambled, boiled, poached, sunny side or whipped into an omelette, i think the owners of hatched were onto something as i believe that there really is no one that would say no to brekkie or decline a serving of some yummy bright and sunny, maybe even runny, eggs!

hatched definitely was outfitted to match the happy and fun vibe that the dining concept brought with it. with a nice bar counter with classic high stools on one end, and long wooden canteen-like tables filling up the rest of the space, hatched was busy that sunday morning, with diners spilling out onto the lobby of evan's lodge. run, i think totally by family and friends, the staff were attentive and extremely friendly, making the dining experience feel like one you were having at home. the slight disappointment for me was the food. not only did it take a while to arrive, the dishes sounded a lot better in the catalogue of eggs (aka menu) then they looked and tasted.

we actually had two none egg dishes in addition to what i would define as classic egg dishes. the none eggies were actually ordered by the kids, which kinda surprised me with both of them loving their eggs. anyway, the bacon rap - fried bacon wrapping fresh mozzarella, served with fig jam turned out quite refreshing, think the classic tomato and mozz appetizer but with a salty twist. the animal farm, which was meant to be pancakes in animal shapes (i was secretly excited to see how they would turned out!) was served normal style (i.e. round!) and while i was slightly disappointed, the pancakes were pretty good. light, fluffy with a buttery and creamy feel, dusted with icing sugar and served with simple maple syrup, at six bucks a pop, the animal farm was tremendous value and would definitely make any hatchling (kid) happy!

eggs-wise, we had the burly benedict - two poached eggs on classic english muffins, served on a bed of caramelized onions, topped with corned wagyu beef and accompanied by sauteed potatoes; and the usual suspects - 'simple and sweet' two eggs scrambled, served with a sausage and huge toast. maybe the expectations were higher with hatched being an eggs place, but g and i were not entirely impressed. the benedict and suspects were okay but i think we both agree that we have had better benedicts and big breakfast equivalents elsewhere.

while i think hatched still needs a bit more time under the incubator to not only sort out its kitchen and service but more importantly to add the finesse and punch into its food, the kids had a ball of a time. it is definitely a place to check out, but i'd give the place a bit more time to iron out its kinks and then it might really just 'rise & dine'!

relishing!

digging deep into the mojito archives reveal that the inaugural trip to relish was way back in 2007! a good two years later (i did go back there one more time like in early 08), g and i decided to treat my sis, mom and the kids to a burger bonanza at relish...so we packed ourselves into the odyssey and headed across town for some major burger relishing!

to be really honest, i was a little worried that chef willin's burger concept might not be such a hit with singaporeans, but i guess i am wrong, with relish not only full with family and friends alike, just by the shear number of recent burger joint openings make me think maybe chef willin really was onto something. relish, in my book, pretty much is singapore's very first burger concept joint and he has definitely set some high standards to beat. the place was as cheery as i remembered it, with classic wood tables, soft warm lighting and myriad of pristine white chairs. the menu has evolved and expanded quite a bit, really displaying chef willin's innovation, creativity and understanding of fusing the classic burger with that of local flavors.

new on the menu included a lamb cutlet dish, morphed from a lamb in pita concoction from before, a mirin & teriyaki chicken rice burger and chicken mesak merah. they all seriously sounded really yum, but having committed to share the bacon & cheese burger with e, i let g, my mom and my sis indulge in the lamb and chicken rice burgers. the b&c burger continues to be a classic hit at relish. think nice sizeable slab of pure beef ground into a juicy patty, crispy bacon strips and melted emmenthal cheese slapped in between fresh veggies and a sesame seed bun. it was slightly messy but still oh-so good! g's open lamb cutlet on focaccia was a nice refreshing surprise. I was slightly worried that it might be a tad too oily and spiced up but it had a good balance of the flavors from the lamb marinated with a bunch of classic mediterranean spices. served on a bed of caramelized onions and freshly baked focaccia, you can tell that a lot of thought had gone in to ensure the perfect balance of sweet, salty and spicy with no overdose on unnecessary carbs. the rice burger added a nice asian touch to the otherwise bun based menu. unlike the rice burgers served at mos burger, relish used a mixture of brown and unpolished rice to form the bed of the burger. laying on the rice bed was a generous mirin & teriyaki marinated chicken fillet, which was then topped with crispy bits of taro (i think!) strips. again, relish concocted this with precision, ensuring that no one would be overly stuffed from the rice to enjoy the yummy sweet, tender and juicy chicken.

i have to of course mention that the fries that accompany every burger are purely fantastic. fried till crisp on the outside, but warm and creamy on the inside, just dipping it in classic ketchup makes one go into french fry heaven! relish's onion rings are another definite must try...think ultra sweet white onions, battered and deep fried again till crisp. the sweetness of the rings combined with the crunch and slightly salty batter are so yum that i can't decide which is better, relish's fries or rings! i think it is pretty much a tie but do pay relish a visit and let me know what your votes are....fries or rings *grin*

gourmet british pub grub

i begin this post with a little confession...and that is actually, this post is spinning off my second trip to the queen and mangosteen...the first being with my gal pal l over dinner, which i did intend to blog about but decided to wait to trip two given the bad pictures the first time around...so i'm glad to announce that i did get some pretty sweet shots of the food, so i'm all set to fill you in on one of the better british pub spots here in singapore i've begun to develop a liking for....

situated where the corduroy cafe used to live at vivo, the queen and mangosteen did a pretty nice job with the decor and lay out of the place. with the beer counter being one of the main highlights of the pub, it occupied most of the frontal bit of the pub but being on the ground floor, the pub pretty much spills over onto the verandah, perfect for some al fresco dining and an almost perfect view of the developments at sentosa. learning from trip one, the portions of the grub can get quite big so between the 4 of us and 2 kids, we decided to go with pretty much mostly appetizers and it being a weekend, the special sunday roast.

the mixed seafood deli board gets a huge nod from me, think ultra fresh sweet prawns, crayfish, just out of the fryer beer battered fish and crispy whitebait, and not forgetting the quattro set of yummy dipping sauces from wasabi mayo, garlic aioli to thai chilli sauce. perfect for sharing and getting the tummies all ready for more pub grub.

another must try and also great for the kids and for sharing, would be the mini hamburgers and chips. nice pint size burgers but still packed in with a decent beef patty, fresh veggies and melted cheese, paired with one of the yummiest fries i've tasted, these mini burgers will most definitely put a smile on any kid's or adult's face alike!

the sunday roast was a decent effort by the queen and mangosteen to serve up some traditional british pub food. fresh boiled veggies accompanied a nice piece of beef, smothered with a mushroom onion gravy. not forgetting of course the yorkshire pudding bun to wipe up the left over gravy! the roast came with a truffle mushroom soup (with generous bits of mushroom no less!) and profiteroles to add the sweet ending to the meal.

the queen and mangosteen pretty much did a decent job in replicating the classic british pub and yet managed to weave in a touch of gourmet class to it. worth a visit for a good brunch with the family or drinks and dinner with pals to wind down after a long week!

sunset bay

having spent last evening as a guest to sunset bay's second anniversary at their new locale at east coast, this girl thought she'd better punch out a post before she gets overwhelmed again! (okay, i admit...more lazy then overwhelmed!) anyway, g and i had actually checked out sunset bay two weeks or so back, after hearing much about if from friends. opened by the same folks that started what i would say the first beach bar in sentosa way back when, they really did a good job in bringing back the chilled, laid back vibe of the beach cafe and even better yet, just a stone's throw away from where i stay!

i'm not sure what it is, maybe its the sea breeze or the friendly crew, but stepping into sunset bay would immediately make one almost feel like you were on holiday! to top it all off, sunset bay serves up some mean eurasian cuisine, perfect to go with a pint or two of ice cold san miguels. i would highly recommend the calamari to start off the meal. unlike other places, the calamari at sunset bay is breadcrumbed instead of battered, making the appetizer somewhat less oily, letting the sweetness of the fresh squid really come through. the mains we had pretty much hit the spot for the both of us as well. i was craving pasta so i indulged in a serving of seafood spaghetti, while g had a bowlful of beef smores (stewed beef with root vegetables and freshly baked pita bread). the pasta was done al dente and tossed in a freshly made tomato base and fresh crayfish and seafood. the beef was stewed till tender (yes, the fall off the bone type!) with yummy veggies and awesome gravy to drench the pitas in.

sunset bay has most definitely stayed true to its beach cafe roots....definitely a place to head to to wind down after a long day and kick back with some great food!

ps: if you ride a bicycle, do head down on tuesday nights to enjoy some great discounts!

everything with fries

having spotted the article by posh nosh a week or two ago in urban raving about the joint, this girl headed to this nice bright and cheery joint off east coast road last saturday, with a gang in tow. to be honest, i was a little worried having glanced at their menu on the website, that the choices might be a tad limited but we figured that with a name like 'everything with fries', the focus might be on the fries more than anything! e & e were of course stoked by the actual prospect of having literally everything with fries, so i guess we all entered the eatery with eager anticipation.

(1) drinks - check.
the kids literally fell in love with the nutella milkshake and the old school coke float. i didn't quite manage to get a pic of the nutella milkshake just cause the kids were fighting over who could have it, so apologies there. but i would recommend ordering it and sharing it because it is so sinfully yummy (think thick vanilla milkshake infused with hints of hazelnutty natella) that you might polish it off all by yourself and have no room for anything else!

(2) starters - check.
with a name like one egg soup, i would order it just to figure out what it is and how it tastes! it turned out to be a creamy chicken broth, thickened by one egg yolk and garnished with deep fried meringues. its pretty lemak so again, worth trying but do share just so that you have space for the mains!

(3) mains and fries - check.
between the six of us, we polished off a cheeseburger, a lamb burger, a grilled ham & cheese sandwich and a pork cutlet sandwich. off the lot, i would head back to just for another serving of the pork cutlet sandwich. breaded in seasoned panko breadcrumbs, the combination of the crisp cutlet, juicy moist meat together with a touch of mayo, fresh vegs and sweet old school buns, the pork cutlet sandwich really hit the spot. The cheeseburger would have been perfection if they slapped on a runny egg...it might have made eating slightly messier but i think it would have really completed the burger. The lamb burger was quite heavily spiced so if you aren't into spices, i would recommend just sticking with the good old pork cutlet. the ham & cheese sandwich was simple but chic. served hot of the griddler, the slices were thoroughly buttered, hugging layers of fresh ham and yummy melted emmental cheese. while i thought the fries would be the main feature, i think the mains stole the show. the fries came either thickly cut or in a shoe string style with a choice of original, curry, salt & vinegar, sour cream & onion or garlic & herb seasoning. nothing really to shout about, the seasonings didn't really come through as strongly as i expected and the fries well...were basically missing an oomph.

and finally (4) dessert - check.
we effectively only had to make one choice, since the nutella tart was a default selection. we ended with two tarts, one nutella and one pear. the nutella was definitely the better tart...with an oreo cookie base and slight pudding-ish texture. i think the panna cotta and creme brulee die hards would love the tart...i wasn't too wowed purely because i'm not a big pudding person. i think it would have been pretty cool if they managed to do like a nutella mousse or fudge tart instead...but that's just me *grin*

overall? definitely worth a visit, be it with friends or family. run by the folks that run awfully chocolate, and if it's cake business is anything to go by, this girl is sure that everything with fries will not only be refining its food but adding to its repertoire!

nordic flavours at fika

the adventure to fika started off post gym two sundays back with g inspired by the write up in the sunday times showcasing the new and noteworthy places in the arab street area. with ikea as this girl's only swedish cuisine reference (ikea rocks by the way!), i was keen to explore new territories and excited by the new discovery!

i guess no swedish meal is complete without a serving of köttbullar. fika served up a nice homemade version with eight ground beefballs, served with yummy creamy gravy, boiled potatoes, and a dollop of lingonberry jam. i was actually torn between the classic meatball dish and the sandwich version, and while i am quite sure the sandwich version would be good, i was satisfied with the köttbullar, cream, jam, potatoes and all. g had the steak and hash and it turned out a little different from what we both expected. the potatoes weren't stripped but were cubed instead and fried with similarly cubed pieces of beef. tossed with ultra sweet caramelized onions and a sunny side up, i would say this dish gets the worth a try from me if you aren't in the meatball-y mood. having said that of course, fika's menu did include all-day brekkies and some yummy sounding sandwiches and desserts so i would recommend going with you gut (literally!) when you order cause i think fika would serve out a pretty good rendition of any thing on the menu. if in doubt, do check with the staff there who are really warm and friendly and will definitely give you some of their personal recommendations!

ps: i just have to say that g and i were fika's first NETS customers *grin*

a definite place for friends, food & fame

quietly tucked in the creatively architectured la salle college of the arts building, fifteen minutes is one of the new school based places that are slowly making a name for themselves. outfitted beautifully with modern edgy furniture and detailing yet keeping the old school style of a canteen and cafe, the place definitely had a nice 'come on in and chill' feel to it.

the food was deliberately kept simple i think, probably to gauge the intensity of the crowds when term starts, so they stuck to the usual soups, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and pastas. as g and i were still somewhat full from brunch, we settled to share a portion of wings and a mushroom pizza. the wings were pretty good, not overly oily and marinated just about right, and the pizza too was refreshingly well done. served on an ultra thin pita-like base, the pizza had a good blend of freshly made tomato paste, mushrooms and cheese. topped with some special ground pepper mix and a dollop of what i make out to be some form of yoghurty cheese, the pizza definitely is one of the better thin crust ones that i've tried...not to mention at a very good price too!

tagged to be a place for friends, food and fame, fifteen minutes does live up to its claim for being a spot for friends (and family) to hang out over some good food. as for the fame bit...just in case anyone was wondering, the lower level is all decked out for open mike sessions and plush seats for creative thinking, so the opportunity for fame is there for inspiring singers, musicians and writers alike!

excited about heading to the new orchard central to check out the new mall and to more importantly (and hopefully), try to get the missing nut to fix my helmet at the board shop, this girl had a bit of a brain fart moment as to where to go to for brunch. but as it turned out, we couldn't quite figure out where would be best to park so we landed up at orchard point, and in crossing the road to get to orchard, lo and behold, the answer to brunch literally stared us in the face - KPO!

i have to admit that i do have a soft spot for old places made new so i was looking forward to brunching at KPO, after hearing and reading quite a bit about it. decor wise, it was part cafe, part bar, part industrial, part post office (literally!)..and it all kinda came together in an odd sort of way. food wise, the menu wasn't too extensive but had the right variety to satisfy anyone's brunch cravings. with a good mix of western and singaporean dishes, i found it a little hard to decide what my calories deserved! g took the western route and chose the breakfast steak (medium rare) and i surprised even myself by going with the sir roti john. for one not really used to having red meat for brunch, i found the steak pretty good. it was a good size, marinated well (though g found it a tad salty) and served up with 2 sunny side ups and homemade hand cut potato chips. not a bad way to kick start a sunday if you ask me *grin* but if your tummy isn't used to that much protein in the morning and or have a thing for carbs (like me!), i highly recommend the sir roti john. this not only had the authenticity of the classic malay dish, it had the fancy touch of the flavor of wagyu beef and a freshly baked loaf. toasted and not fried, this was not at all oily and stuffed full of both local and imported ingredients.

the verdict? the food gets the nod from me for being calorie deserving, the coffee (i had a skinny latte) on the hand although was at half price, wasn't quite worth it. vibe wise, it definitely does exude a nice unique charm and would be worth a sunday brunch visit with the family and kids or with a bunch of pals..just to gather, catch up and yes do a bit of KPO-ing!

canele

there is not doubt that canele is probably the place to go for kick ass chocolates and mind blowing desserts...i mean when i don't know what to get for pak law...a box of canele handmade chocolates and truffles will definitely always does the trick *wink*. but this post isn't to rave about canele's chocolates but more to give a big shout out for extending its culinary finesse beyond the sweet endings and into its entrees, sides and mains.

dinner was a little late last friday evening but we manage to hit the new canele at paragon at the perfect time, post dinner and pre coffee so it had a nice quiet cafe buzz to it. i was craving pizza that evening and was literally spoilt for choice so heeding the maitre'd's recommendation, i indulged and had the big breakfast for dinner! plastered with a half boiled egg, the pizza was layered with fresh tomato paste, pepperoni and bacon and baked fresh on not your usual doughy pizza base but on a rather more like the slightly flaky dough, similar to that used in the classic chinese red bean pancakes. it definitely hit the spot for me but unless you really are hungry, this big breakfast can easily satisfy two.

as i predicted, g had the bolognaise and poached egg with parmesan cheese doria, translated to simply mean awesome bolognaise baked rice with a perfectly poached egg. i really enjoyed the mouthfuls i had...think tangy yet sweet tomatoes stir fried in minced beef, covering short grain rice and enveloped with a generous portion of freshly grated parmesan cheese. topped with the warmth of the gooey runny egg, this not only was a visual piece of work with the warm colours, it tasted pretty good as well. what i didn't expect was g's choice of soups... i had my bet on either the cream of mushroom or the minestrone but i think g chose right with the corn and clam chowder. bursting with flavours of sweet corn and sea saltyness of the clams, the soup, served with homemade garlic pesto bread, was a good appetiser, whetting the appetite without over filling our tummies before dinner.

dessert honestly wasn't in my plan, although i did spot the crepes section in the menu and made a mental note to come back for them another day! but g seemed taken by the possibility of a nutella crepe so i saved half of my pizza in a doggie bag and dedicated the rest of my tummy space to the heavenly nougatine. filled with nutella, salty caramel, caramelized filo, nougatine ice cream and vanilla crème chantilly...no one and i mean no one will be disappointed with this sweet crepe. whole wheat crepes layered with generous spreads of nutella and topped with home made nougatine ice cream and a touch of salty caramel...if one ever needed a definition of dessert bliss...this pretty much will be it!

o.ri.ole

did you know that the latin origin of the word oriole stems from the word aurum or gold? i actually googled and wiki-ed it, hoping to get some inspiration for a fitting title to this post, and the discovery suddenly all made sense. the oriole cafe and bar truly was like the bird, standing out proud all decked out in truly gorgeous wood and leather deco - equivalent to the bird's yellow and black body, and golden, without a doubt, describes everything the cafe was...from the awesome food to the friendly service and oh most definitely, the coffee experience.

i have to begin with the end of the meal, simply because the latte i had was simply the best i have ever had in a long long time. lattes are more than just a coffee with steamed milk...it starts with the artistic visual sealing of the top of the drink, providing somewhat of a clue of the barista that brewed the coffee and i guess a pretty good idea how the cuppa would actually taste. it's always a treat to watch someone make a cup of coffee, the latte especially because it is a definite art, from the brewing of the espresso to the steaming of the milk and my personal favorite part, the skillful infusing process of the steamed milk with the espresso, complete with the decorative detail on the foam top. the ease with which chief barista john whipped up my latte didn't appear too different from some other people i've seen, but the latte that resulted was hugely different. capped with a pretty toffee colored leaf, the latte was perfect. you know how it is sometimes when you first sip your coffee and all you get is the milk, or worse foam? well...the latte at oriole is brewed such that every sip had the rich coffee burst of flavor with just the right creaminess of the freshly steamed milk. not the least bit acidic, and no heart racing or funny tummy feelings i sometimes get after drinking coffee, this is most definitely how coffees should be.

aside from the fantastic coffees, oriole has been touted to serve up quite a mean fish and chips, and i agree. the portion was generous, snapper was very fresh and fried in yummy crispy batter. the secret to the dish in my book is that they got the fish to batter ratio right, so the garlicky batter didn't overshadow the sweetness of the fish. the thick cut fries too complemented the fish...with hints of aioli, and the homemade tartar sauce truly completed the dish. if there was another dish to recommend, my vote would go to oriole's signature burger.

think freshly ground homemade beef pattie, infused with caramelised onions, topped with melted cheese and a sunny side up, this burger was very very good. maybe it was the sweet onions, or maybe they put in a dash of fruit chutney but there was a sweet tangy flavor lingering in the background that augmented the flavors of the ground beef, making this burger really stand out. again, served with thick cut aioli garlic fries....the burger gets top marks from me!

i think the oriole just became this girl's new favorite cafe on the island..don't be surprised if you see more ravings here on mojitos!
