the new, somewhat new but not that noted
with the recent articles in the newspapers citing thistlesound as a hidden gem, this girl decided to swing by for a quick take out and to see if this would be the new spot in siglap to watch. maybe it was because i took it out instead of having the sandwich at the shop... or maybe it was because my expectations were raised after the rave reviews i've read. don't get me wrong, the teriyummy chicken sandwich was not terrible...it was just a tad salty in my book and lacked a slight oomph but the panini was fresh and grilled with a sandwich maker so that was a plus. other than that though, the sandwich was quite ordinary. the shop though was quaint... part music school, part cafe... it does make for a nice place to just kick back with a book or to run away from everyone just to get some work done. so there....thistlesound didn't quite blow me away like it seemed to some others, but its still new so you never know!

armed with a slight craving for some phad thai and tom yum, i began a search for thai restaurants in the east. i know there is the lemon grass, aroy thai and thai expresses...but after being spoilt rotten with the authentic thai cooking at thai noodle house, this girl was hoping to uncover something similar in the east of singapore. it boiled down to yellowlight...located along the popular east coast road, g and i stepped in and immediately felt transported to thailand. nibbling on yummy prawn crackers and homemade thai chilli dip, we placed our orders and i was secretly excited that we might have stumbled on to a thai noodle house equivalent in the east! we had the tom yum talay, assam fish and pandan wrapped chicken. the tom yum and assam fish were both quite authentic, with fresh ingredients and rich spices. the chicken though was a little too minced for my liking, making the dish a little more like a chicken otah then the usual pandan chicken that i was used to. in all, yellowlight gets a nod for having some classic thai flavours, however, both g and i felt that they somehow still didn't quite hit the spot. the search continues!
