nakhon kitchen

having gotten so used to the fare and proximity of thai noodle house back when g was at bukit timah, this girl honestly hasn't been as equally happy with the alternative thai food choices over in the eastern end of singapore. i mean, there are options but no one particular place has yet managed to make me feel that i've discovered the thai noodle house of the east, as it were. my last post on the thai table, probably comes the closest but they still don't quite make the cut for they don't serve up the oh so classic thai beef noodles! so when g suggested heading over to this newly spotted corner thai joint bedok, i immediately said yes, secretly hoping that this new discovery could potentially be the place that we've been looking for!

a nice thai surprise!

to be honest, the simpang bedok area is really the last place i would imagine finding a thai restaurant....much less a good one, especially after being spoilt with the likes of the thai noodle house! i think i must have subconsciously developed a criteria for thai food in singapore - number 1. it must serve a good pad thai. al dente rice noodles, fresh seafood, crunchy veggies, chopped nuts, chilli flakes, huge wedge of lime and the table must have on standby already, fish sauce and sugar. number 2. it must know, even better serve, rad na. number 3. a kickass tom yam soup. thai table passed criteria 1 with flying colors (hence the dish gets to be the lead pic for the post!) and went on to surprise by fulfilling criterion 2 and 3!

rad na was on the menu and this is really the first time i see it on the menu at any thai restaurant. i think g would have ordered it if not for the temptation of the other dishes...so i suspect we'd be back soon to have a taste. the tom yum was authentically done - think warm fiery feeling in the tummy, burning lips but still the urge to have more, and i would highly recommend the brinjal with basil. extremely tasty with the refreshing flavors of fresh basil, i would be quite content just having this with rice! the grilled pork was decent with a really nice dipping sauce and i think we went overboard with the chilli crab. it was the only let down and while it was part of $1 promotion, i would highly recommend just sticking to the authentic thai stuff.

dinner truly turned out to be quite a nice thai surprise....now at least there's a decent thai place in the east!

the new, somewhat new but not that noted

with the recent articles in the newspapers citing thistlesound as a hidden gem, this girl decided to swing by for a quick take out and to see if this would be the new spot in siglap to watch. maybe it was because i took it out instead of having the sandwich at the shop... or maybe it was because my expectations were raised after the rave reviews i've read. don't get me wrong, the teriyummy chicken sandwich was not terrible...it was just a tad salty in my book and lacked a slight oomph but the panini was fresh and grilled with a sandwich maker so that was a plus. other than that though, the sandwich was quite ordinary. the shop though was quaint... part music school, part cafe... it does make for a nice place to just kick back with a book or to run away from everyone just to get some work done. so there....thistlesound didn't quite blow me away like it seemed to some others, but its still new so you never know!

armed with a slight craving for some phad thai and tom yum, i began a search for thai restaurants in the east. i know there is the lemon grass, aroy thai and thai expresses...but after being spoilt rotten with the authentic thai cooking at thai noodle house, this girl was hoping to uncover something similar in the east of singapore. it boiled down to yellowlight...located along the popular east coast road, g and i stepped in and immediately felt transported to thailand. nibbling on yummy prawn crackers and homemade thai chilli dip, we placed our orders and i was secretly excited that we might have stumbled on to a thai noodle house equivalent in the east! we had the tom yum talay, assam fish and pandan wrapped chicken. the tom yum and assam fish were both quite authentic, with fresh ingredients and rich spices. the chicken though was a little too minced for my liking, making the dish a little more like a chicken otah then the usual pandan chicken that i was used to. in all, yellowlight gets a nod for having some classic thai flavours, however, both g and i felt that they somehow still didn't quite hit the spot. the search continues!

saweedeekaa!

this place was ranked tops in last weeks' sunday times review of the hot and happening foodie places in singapore and personally, this girl could not agree more. okay, i know i should have posted and raved about this gem tucked away along coronation road much earlier (i have piccies from months ago as proof!) but i somehow didn't punch one out partly because i wanted to get more piccies of the awesome food served and partly because i kinda wanted to keep this little treasure a secret for a little while longer!

thai noodle house. it is now no longer a secret to the rest of singapore and while i am glad that madam achara siripong and husband now get the reviews that the place so much deserves, i do hope it wouldn't be too hard to get a place there for dinner! i got to know the place through g and fell in love with the authentic thai fare and warm service. its a small joint and hence common to see madam siripong herself working the floor...making everyone feel like part of the thai extended family!

i do admit that when we do head to thai noodle house, i'm content to just devour either the pad thai or thai beef noodles. same same all the time one might think, but they are both so good, that they always (and i truly mean always) hit the spot and truly satisfy one's crave for a bit of thailand. fresh seafood garnishes the thai kway teow, but i think what wins it for me for the pad thai is the authentic (and generous) servings of crushed peanuts, chilli (gun)powder and lime...oh of course not forgetting the sprinkle of sugar over the dish. sweet and salty all at once with a hint of tangy lime makes the pad thai an un-regrettable and unbeatable asian kway teow dish! p.s.... for people not in the mood the for the tang, have the pad si you...the thai version of the black char kway teow....same goodness of the pad thai but done in with the sweetness of some secret thai black sauce!

the beef noodles is the other winner...with fantastic beef broth, homemade succulent beef balls and fresh slices of beef, this dish will warm the hearts and tummies of all alike...regardless if it is a cold and wet or hot and muggy evening outside! and...if noodles are not your thing, have the stewed beef brisket...the awesome melt in your mouth slices with thick flavourful gravy will go fantastically with a bit of rice.

if there is room for more...the seafood tom yum goong is a must try, with all the rich yummy thai flavours of tom yum, lemon grass and basil all simmered into a bowlful of spicy soup. finally, don't forget to have some old school cha yan or homemade chin chow just to make keep fiery tummies at bay! khorb koon kaa thai noodle house!
