i used to think that dim sum was a bi-monthly event only when i was at uni...but after setting up mojitos and madness, i realised that dim sum is quite a natural weekend thing for us, either g or i suggesting we head out for some push cart cuisine. this time around, it was really quite by the lack of ideas, that landed us at turf city.
yup, it was another one of those 'i can't believe things still exist there' kinda place! been a while since i last been to turf city and thought of it more of a place for seafood then anything else. but turns out that ah yat seafood served dim sum during lunch, with a big 50% promo mondays through saturdays and a 30% sundays and public holidays, this place was surprisingly busy!
food was okay. nothing much to shout about with the usual dim sum fare of carrot cake, chee cheong fun, feng zhao, pai guat and xiao long bao. we ventured onto new ground with the hot and sour dumplings and banana red bean balls for dessert. i imagined the hot sour dumpling to be a bit more a kin to the hot and sour soup, but it turn out to be just dumplings in a soya sauce vinegar mix. a bit of a disappointment there but at least the dumplings were fresh with bits of chives. the banana red bean was a good change from the standard dan tats. think goreng pisang with red bean paste. odd combination but surprisingly quite yummy put together. big pluses with this place? free parking and the nostalgia of being transported back in time a litte *grin*
