when it comes to prawn noodles, dia only has them at two makan places in singapore...no, correction...make that three places! i grew up on the beach road prawn noodles and only in the last seven years or so, been introduced to the jalan sultan one housed at kallang. both of these places rank pretty much head to head, if you ask me. lots of similarities, from the wu xiang and lime juice combo with awesome soup stock, right down to the fact that both are not located where their names proclaim!
in any case, we were at the jalan sultan joint last weekend. kinda like a ritual thing before heading down to kallang riverside park for some wakeboarding action....and as always, the place was teeming with people. we quickly grabbed a seat and g started to get in line. while waiting, i was quite amazed at the system of operations there, so i whipped out the handed camera and triggered away! some what of an organized mess, the men and women there seem to have gotten the preparation of this quite awesome bowl of noodles down pat. okay, they do mess up every now and again (see the piccie with them deliberating!) but i guess most customers forgive them in anticipation of the supreme stock, fresh prawns and tender pork ribs!
dia had her noodles dry with just prawns, which was really good with a pinch of chilli powder, lots of fried onions and a touch of the stock, while g had his with soup and of course, ba kut. on top of the noodles, we had a serving of wu xiang too. i know, it sounds like a lot, but we always manage to finish everything and i think it really has got to do with some synergism between the wu xiang and prawn noodles! fried on the spot, served hot with fantastic homemade chilli sauce, the wu xiang really completed the entire meal experience.
we were in and out under twenty minutes, a little hot but extremely satisfied. how does this measure up against the beach road one? well...its been a while since i've been there, although i have to admit, having grown up eating that version, i would like to say the beach road one is just a little notch up *grin* (akan datang a post on that yah?)....and if anyone is wondering where the third prawn noodle joint is? its actually somewhere near pasir panjang and only by invite..cause its a friend's aunt who makes one kick ass version of this prawn noodles!
