it was a movie-filled past few days, beginning with the slight challenge of fixing a date with my niece and nephew given their packed social calendars, to actually get a good time to take them out. the plan was to initiate e, my niece to the whole movie experience and i think we chose the perfect show - up! *grin*
pixar did a fantastic job with up...not only were the animations state of the art (and this was only the 2d version!), the storyline was simple yet heartwarming. touching on life, death, companionship and sacrifice, the movie will find one laughing (and even tearing at some point!) along on the adventure. definitely one of the best animated movies i've seen and think e has formally earned her 'movie goer' badge at the ripe old age of three (she managed a full hour before starting to get restless but was happily appeased with popcorn)!
the other two movies that i watched and i think are worth mentioning are seven pounds and push. will smith, as always, was stellar in seven pounds. not sure why the box office didn't take too well to the movie...maybe it was a little slow going and slightly confusing in the beginning but watching the story being told the way it did, to me at least, contributed to making the movie good. call it a story of twisted revenge, or a tale of redemption, the movie really makes one wonder if such true goodness does exist. i think the movie deserved a bit more attention but i guess seven pounds falls into the category of either liking it or hating it. i won't give away too much detail about the movie so do rent it at your neighborhood video ezy and decide for yourself *grin*
if you are heroes follower then push will be something that you might enjoy. i don't remember seeing this one at the box office and think it might have been worth seeing on the big screen, with some of the pretty big action scenes...but definitely worth catching on dvd. the story is somewhat familiar (think set in hongkong style infernal affairs) and doesn't dwell too deep into things but even at the somewhat surface level, the show does engage. shot in hongkong with some familar faces like chris evans, dakota fanning, ming-na wen and djimon hounsou (from blood diamond fame i think), the show did quite a good job in attempting a somewhat superhero plot that isn't based on any prior comic book. so go watch, sniff and push!
