purvis paradise (incorporating hawker rocker 107!)

first post of the new year and this girl cannot be happier to write about her recent trips (yes, g and i headed over there twice in a span of four days!) to the little lane called purvis street.

hawker rocker 107's shout out goes to the hock lam street popular beef kway teow. it has been a while since i last had beef kway teow done this way and it immediately reminded me of this phase in secondary school where i was really into this dark gooey version of beef noodles. back then, with the appreciation of good food not yet quite honed, beef kway teow from any stall was basically just...beef kway teow. a decade and half later, this girl's finally acquired some skills in the area of food appreciation and would highly recommend heading to this hock lam street beef kway teow stall for a quick beef fix. with fresh beef slices, tender homemade beef balls, melt in your mouth briskets, the dish is both good enjoyed with soup or done dry...although the dry version still wins it for me. why? think crunchy bits of peanut and a serving of a salted vegetable all stirred into the sweet dark sauce. it is literally, giam (salty), sng (sour), ti (sweet) all rolled into one awesome dish.

business is very brisk with tables turning around quickly and many people stopping by to da bao..we even sighted wong li lin and alan wu as we were leaving! truly deserving of its 'popular' claim in its name if you ask me *grin*! yummy!

trip number two was to good old yet con. probably one of those places that are legendary and should be conserved if you ask me...with its old school cashier counter, mosaic floors and marble coffee shop tables, this is another place that brings back old memories! pak law used to bring me there as a kid and i always remember the booths on the upstairs, the smell of garlic and chicken in the air, and the slightly grouchy old man that was the only designated collector of money. nothing much has changed if you ask me...okay, i can't say for sure that the booths still exist upstairs, but the old man is still there collecting the cash and the chicken rice still rocks. this is one place this girl can enjoy her chicken rice and not worry too much about the calories! the rice is fragrant and flavorful minus the oil and the chicken is lean and steamed to perfection. coupled with free flow of ginger and kick ass homemade chilli....yet con, in my book, sets the standard for how the chicken rice experience should be!

the additional bonus is that yet con, being a hainanese joint, serves up a truly authentic hainanese pork chop. drenched in tangy tomato sauce, the pork chop is crispy on the outside and tender on the outside...served with stewed potatoes and onions, this is one must-have dish at yet con, never mind that the plan was for chicken rice!

well written. I couldn't agree more. Yet Con remains my favourite chicken rice place in Singapore. You should also try their barbeque roast pork, served with dark sweet sauce and salted vegetable. Kang
