the hunt has officially begun for the best place here in sunny singapore for that mean glass of mojito. a tad delayed i admit, with this precise blog named after the yummy cocktail..but i guess its all good since the hunt begins with what i think time out singapore claims to serve up the meanest mojito in the country.
cuba libre was the place in question. we arrived there a little past the usual dinner time which could have explained the slight lack in buzz of the place. i wasn't too impressed with the ambience nor the service, both of which i found seriously lacking, but brushed that aside with thoughts of a good mojito and possible good food to match. cutting to the chase, here's this girl's verdict:
the food. the highlight was the quesadilla con carne. served warm with a good mix of beef, beans and awesome melted cheese, topped with fresh guacamole and salsa, this was very good. the fried calamari was disappointing as i expected a more spicy exotic taste following its dish description, and the mayo dip too didn't quite make up for it. g's lamb meatballs were not bad....meaty but each meatball was infused with herbs to balance the strong aroma of the lamb. the sauce could have been better, with more onions and peppers to add another dimension to the flavour of the tomato salsa.
the mojito. when served, the drink looked promising with lots of mint leaves and lime. post stirring and finally tasting, the drink was good...but not outstanding. think it was missing a bit more sugar and needed more oomph from the mint. it had enough of the tang from the lime to balance the strong rum which to me is the other test of a good mojito...to be able to make the drink taste yummy and refreshing without tasting too much of the alcohol, but yet still giving the nice warm fuzzy feeling *grin* so, bottom line? i won't give the honours to cuba libre for singapore's best mojito.... the search continues!
