in my book, union farm is truly one underrated makan place here in singapore. although not even listed in the makansutra, this place has its own cult following with the place a buzz with activity every time we head there for dinner. just parking the car in the gravel driveway, one would immediately feel transported back in time. one could almost picture the place back in the 1960s, with children chasing chickens around the compound!
climbing up the wooden stairs, the yummy smells of the food and the sight of other diners licking their fingers after peeling open the little sachets of meat always makes me wanna quickly sit down and devour the famous chee pow kai. the walls are lined with newspaper clippings preserved from a long time back, making me wonder how come this place isn't given the raves that i think it deserves.
g and i usually always order the same three things - chee pow kai, mushroom soup and noodles. partly because its just the two of us and partly because the chee pow kai on its own is enough to hit the spot *grin* the order is usually for 15 packets of chee pow kai and yes, we have no problem polishing off all 15 yummy packets. the right way to eat the chicken is to open them over the noodles, allowing the juices of the chicken and secret sesame seasoning to spill over the noodles. the paper really keeps the flavor all in and i'm always in amazement how they manage to cook the chicken to perfection.
union farm will definitely get another post here on mojitos and madness when i garner more people and head over to this 1960s gem for more yummy old school dinning.
