sumi do...sumi don't

its been slightly over a week since we moved to the bedok house and we are still busy unpacking. as a result, plans for mother's day lunch were left pretty much to the last minute but thanks to our new subscription to the business times, my sis discovered that there was a good deal at a new japanese yakitori joint, sumi.

situated at the new wing of centerpoint, it took a while to navigate to the place. it was tucked in a corner, and we discovered the easiest way to get there was via the basement 2 carpark. orders were chosen off the set (part of the deal), which i think included a choice of meats, veges and the like..pus we had a couple of appetizers so i'll cut to the chase and give the low down on what i think were the hits and the misses.

ichi: momotaro tomato. very good. huge succulent japanese tomato, covered with an unusual dressing of sesame, japanese mayo and maybe a tinge of wasabi. i could be wrong with the sauce (forgive my amateur taste buds!) but the dish was excellent. refreshing and tasty. nods all around the table!

ni: pan fried foie gras. one can never go quite wrong with goose liver. paired with thin slices of green apple, this was another dish that got approval all around. of course, this cannot compare to the foie gras we had at ember, but it was good all the same.

san: sashimi salad.
think teochew style yu sheng with generous portions of fresh salmon sashimi. refreshing dressing consisting of lime, sesame oil and fish sauce fused with a hint of wasabi and japanese dressing. this was a hit even with the men in the group!

yon: saba shio its tough to get saba done right and thankfully sumi managed a hit with this one. the fish was very fresh, seasoned with just the right amount of salt, barbequed crisp and topped with minced radish.

go: wagyu beef (yakitori)
wagyu. we had a second round of orders. enough said yah?

roku: sake no toro (yakitori)
trick here is to grill this right. with my dad managing the grill, the fish was yum. cooked close to perfection, the pieces of salmon belly did kinda melt in the mouth...

nana: bacon with enoki mushrooms (yakitori)
another no brainer. think crispy bacon and yummy golden enoki mushrooms. be patient with these though. they need to be cooked that bit longer to get crispy!

i apologise that my piccies aren't really in order, but one can easily figure out which is which *grin* as for the misses well, the rest of the dishes were ordinary. nothing much to shout about, but i won't exactly say there were bad. hotate, chicken with garlic, tiger prawns, mushrooms, sweet corn..the usual. all in all... sumi did and sumi didn't!
