been wanting to do posts on hawker fare but with the adrenaline pumping to post stuff on new makan places, we have subconsciously always made a beeline to the restaurant type places...hence explaining the fifteen odd posts on food that haven't quite done justice the local flavour of hawker fare *blush*! so to balance the scales a little, this post will be the official inaugural one dedicated to the many hawkers in singapore that (to me at least!) truly rock!
lian he bin ji claypot rice. i can't even pronounce it quite right, but this is my personal favourite for yummy claypot rice. granted that i have only tasted the geylang clay pot rice (supposedly many foodies' favorite) and east coast road's pot luck, this chinatown food center resident has got their formula down pat! for those who know me, i am definitely more a noodle person then rice...but with the piping hot claypot in front of me, i can easily down 3 bowls of this yummy mix!
cooked the good old traditional way, each order is cooked over flaming charcoal fires. the rice is flavoured with ultra tender pieces of chicken, spring onions, lup cheong and the most important (maybe even secret ingredient) is the hum yu. the whole experienced is made that much more fun with the do-it-yourself mixing of the dark sweet sauce, allowing you the determine how sweet and dark you would like your rice to be. The best part? letting the rice sit that little bit longer in the hot claypot to allow the base rice to form yummy crispy bits!
ahh. i'm already looking forward to the next trip down! but be warned, the wait for the rice can be as long as 45 minutes...so do call and pre-order before you head down. p.s. soups are yummy too!
