what better way to end the long easter weekend but with a superb lunch and awesome dinner. just to set the record straight, i usually do not, i repeat, do not, indulge in two gastronomic meals in a day but there are the few exceptions. in this case, it was the friends from out of town justification, which if you ask me, truly qualifies as an exception! *wink*
lunch was meant to be simple dim sum at good old trusty crystal jade. turned out that the la mian xiao long bao joint at great world swopped units with her cantonese cousin, and reworked their menu. the plan was to savour the classics of crystal jade (i.e. the la mian and xiao long bao) but the sights and smells got the better of us....
double boiled chicken soup with shark bone.
i thought their regular double boiled chicken soup was already one of the better one's i've had (not counting my mom's chicken soup of course), but one sip of this was enough for me to decide there and then, that this was 'the' chicken soup to have. it had just the right amount of earthiness, balanced with the creaminess of the shark bone to give it a truly exquisite taste. it was so good that we would have licked the bowl dry if we could!
ham, crispy beancurd and rice cakes.
this was ordered after stealing many glances over our neighbouring tables...it looked yum and was on pretty much almost all the bigger tables. my verdict? it wasn't too bad. a little bit of diy was required, as the piece of ham and crispy beancurd skin had to be dipped in malt honey sauce and sandwiched between thin white flour pancakes. the taste was quite unique, with a bit of salty from the ham, sweet from the malt honey and crunch from the beancurd. the rice cakes though were a bit of disappointment, so i'd give it a miss and save the calories if i were to order this again.
the classics.
one can never go wrong with the xiao long bao. it never fails to amaze me how they manage to keep the superior broth enveloped with the succulent meatball within the paperthin wanton skin. this has to be eaten hot for maximum satisfaction and don't worry about the slurping noises you'll make, cause the broth truly is the signature trademark of crystal jade's xiao long bao.
the panfried dumplings aka guo tie was the other classic item off the menu that we decided to order after peeking at another neighbouring table. i don't remember ever having had the guo ties at crystal jade but after this try, it pretty much will be on the top of my list of things to order if i was in the mood for something fried! the dumplings were fried just right, crispy on the outside but the stuffing in the inside remained warm and moist, and yes, even the guo tie had a bit of the broth similar to the xiao long bao which made the dumplings really really good. g and i polished off the three dumplings in double quick time so much so that i didn't manage to get a picture!
our veg dish was egg white, prawn and asparagus. again something we don't usually order, but yummy with a tinge of vinegar all the same. they were really generous with the prawns, which were shelled by the way and the asparagus was fresh.
all in all, crystal jade never fails to disappoint. i give it four scoopies for the great food, outstanding value and good service!
p.s. the dinner entry will be in the next post!
