having heard mixed reviews about the food at corduroy and finch, i wasn't quite sure what to expect. going through the menu, which was quite extensive, i was torn between having a soup and indulging in the apple crumble (which was highlighted as highly recommended in the menu) and having a standard main. i finally gave in to my craving for some meat, and spent a good ten minutes figuring out if i should have the charbroiled beef burger or the roast beef sandwich.
g quickly decided on the rose-paprika spiced authentic hungarian goulash and was sold immediately he saw the hot spinach puree description off the delicatessen - 'hot spinach puree with truffles and snow potatoes served with a fried egg'.
it turned a little different from what we both expected, instead of like a puree of the spinach, the spinach remained as is and it was the truffles and snow potatoes that were pureed. breaking the egg, we let the runny yolk blend into the puree and spinach and it was quite awesome. perfect starter to the dinner, not too much, not too lemak, pretty much just right!
g's hungarian goulash was not bad although i personally prefer oso buco. they were generous with the meat chunks although i think they could have made them more bite sized so as to prevent the meats from drying out. the veges and mash accompanying the goulash was quite well done. sauteed in butter (that's the secret i think!) but still maintaining the freshness of the veggies used.
yes, its probably no secret that i finally decided on the roast beef sandwich and the moment i took the first bite, i immediately told g i was glad i didn't choose the burger! the sandwich was probably the best i've had so far. thin slices of roast beef (note: not dry and stringy), nestled in generous amounts of fresh onions, tomatoes and lettuce, smothered with a creamed horseradish and sauerkraut mayo and sandwiched between thick slices of yummy sourdough bread...it really really hit the spot! just looking at the piccie makes me remember the tremendous taste of the sandwich! *grin*
just to round up, this post was originally meant to be logged in earlier this week, following our dinner at corduroy and finch last saturday night. but i've been so unbelievably busy that i only managed to just sit down to punch in my take of our first trip to corduroy and finch. although a week delayed, i would recommend heading to corduroy and finch for the beef sandwich. i do admit that the desserts looked good and if going by the sister cafe (corduroy cafe) at vivo city, i'm quite sure one won't be disappointed with desserts at this outlet. my personal mission the next time i head over would be to see if their apple crumble makes it to the top of my list. For now, their roast beef sandwich has me sold!
