worth the calories? - the skinny on skinny pizza

dinner at skinny pizza happened really by chance, as the plan really was to have ribs at tony roma's. however the first sight of the snaking queue outside the joint immediately made us do an about turn, and i took the opportunity to suggest heading to skinny pizza. having heard quite a bit about the place, i was honestly curious as to what was so special about skinny pizza that has given rise to its growing number of reviews (and outlets!). now that i've been there (and done that), this girl is happy to report that she is ready to present the skinny on skinny pizza!

the part retro part vintage deco immediately caught my attention and got me even more excited about the place. i mean...good food and a great deco and vibe is really the essence of a good makan place no? anyway...the menu did sound special with some pretty unique varieties, mixing and mashing the traditional italian flavors with our local asian influence. even the soups sounded pretty good so we ended up sharing two of the three daily servings- the wild truffle mushroom and curried pumpkin. accompanied by a nice warm slice of focaccia, the soups were well...average. they were both a little thin in texture and missing that special omph. okay for the purposes of sharing and as appetisers but i for one will not recommend filling your tummy up on them.

now for the main deal...the pizzas. we had the recommended squid ink and braised veal skinnys as well as the meatball bolognese for the kids. a definite grade a for presentation but taste wise, i found the crust a little too flaky for my liking. don't get me wrong, thin crust is fantastic but i personally prefer the doughy, heavier crust types instead of this flaky, cracker-like version. the toppings were good though....think homemade meatballs in bolognese sauce, fresh seafood in a ton of squid ink and tender chunks of braised veal, all garnished with a generous serving of fresh rocket.

so to answer the million dollar question of whether skinny pizza is worth the calories...this girl says only if you have great company and don't mind enjoying your pizzas without the base. don't miss the apple cider though....now that is definitely worth the additional cash and calories!
