phuket. dec 2007

tiger airways got us in nice and early on wednesday. i was a little afraid that our airport transfer guy wouldn’t be waiting for us because i didn’t get a reply from the hotel about the arrangement but it turned out all good. noi, the driver was there waiting for us (with a smile no less!) and got us straight to baipho boutique hotel in no time.

opened only a year or so ago, the baipho is a nice little outfit, located just a stone’s throw away from patong, thus making it nice and convenient for us to get around and settle the things on our must do list…which is all of eat, cable and massage! day one literally flew by with us first watching our thai friend toon, rip it up on the go kart track and then us taking a two hour stint at the cable park. with the whole gang of riders in from bangkok, cable was not only fun due to the many obstacles, (hit and cleared all less the slider *grin*) but also just inspiring watching didi kill it on the skate and aye going massive off the corners and the kickers!

with only so many meals over the three or so days, we took the opportunity to indulge in some good old fashioned thai cuisine. dinner on night one was at a place we’ve been to before...think it is called smiley or happy or something to that effect, in one of the sois off the main patong beach road, about 3 to 4 lanes down from the busy bangla road. it was pad thai for me, rad na for g and a tom yum goong between the both of us. the pad thai was awesome…served hot off the wok, the generous serving of rice noodles was tossed with authentic thai flavours, yummy fresh veggies and topped with lots of chopped peanuts and a touch of lime. the rad na was only so-so according to g, but i think the tom yum goong pretty much made up for the mediocre thai hor fun. the soup had just the right spiciness and tang, and was full with a whole lot of prawns, veggies and lemon grass. not too bad a way to start off the eating part of the trip *grin*!

no matter how stuffed we were, we could not resist stopping by the pancake crepe road side stall the instant we stumbled upon one! we had lots of trouble finding the stall the last time we were in phuket so we immediately stopped for our fix of nutella and banana pancake fix! we later discovered that these stalls were everywhere but the truly authentic one, according to g, was one made like a prata, not a crepe…and guess what? there was one such authentic stall just outside baipho! he didn’t appear again the subsequent nights so this girl made a mental note to have the patience to hunt the real thing down next time!

day two was reserved for just kicking back and relaxing. after a late brekkie at the hotel, g and i took a slow walk to soi bangla and decided to have lunch at scruffy murphy’s the irish pub. partly to satisfy a previous craving that we couldn’t quite figure out back home and partly because most of the reviews did say it was worth checking out, we ventured in for some pub grub. the food definitely looked more impressive then it tasted…just check out g’s order of the guinness steak and kidney pie and our order of onion rings! but overall, although the food was only so-so, i would still recommend checking scruffy murphy’s out just for some good old pub vibes and a few pints of happy hour beers (or cyders!).

the afternoon was spent in heavenly bliss at let’s relax, the body and mind specialist. g and i treated our tired bodies to a 45 minute foot massage and a 2 hour long traditional thai massage. a perfect way to spend the afternoon if you ask me… from the tranquil surroundings, soothing natural background sounds, to the smooth yet firm strokes of the therapists and yummy after massage cashew sesame cookies, the entire experience truly makes one feel like royalty. of all the massage places we’ve been to, let’s relax is definitely getting our nods of approval…even better than the asia herb association experience in bangkok! they are so good that we specially squeezed time just before our flight for a one and half hour session at let’s relax just to tide us till the next time we head to thailand!

dinner was well worth the 400 baht tuk-tuk ride over to phuket town. we’ve been to natural restaurant before and always try to make it back everytime we are in town just because the place not only feels like its someone’s tree house, it is filled with fun, old school artifacts and the food is authentically home style thai. surrounded by fish kept in old tvs, bikes hanging off the walls and eating off old sewing machine tables, g and i tucked into a hearty thai meal. we had a thai mango salad, tom yum goong, thai herbed pork ribs and oyster omelet…all of which were very well done. the mango salad hit the spot for me, with lots of roasted cashews and chillis that complemented the tanginess of the green mango, while g thoroughly enjoyed the omelet which was smoothered with fresh oysters and lots of fried onions. one taste of the tom yum goong and you will immediately be able to tell that it was made from first principles and the pork ribs were tender and encrusted with lots of garlic. aroy mak! to top it all off…the meal only set us back 500 baht!
