just looking through the blog archive of mojitos and other madness made me realise that i have posted an entry every single month on the places i've been to to satisfy the weekend brunch urge of yum cha. so with keeping in the somewhat tradition *grin*, here is september's yum cha place of choice.
kam boat. situated in a little nook in shaw centre the restuarant was busy that saturday morning we headed over. it felt like we were suddenly transported to hong kong with the many voices in conversation, roast meats hanging behind the counter and chinese ladies moving quickly around with trays of stacked bamboo baskets. what was really nice at kam boat was while they had the usual yum cha fare, there were several variations to the classics and i found them really good. we tried the steamed carrot cake for a change from the usual pan fried ones...and i'm really glad we did. this was very smooth, made of fresh turnip and garnished with lup cheong, a bit of sesame oil and fried shallots. a much better and healthier version, and should be on every yum cha menu in my book! i've only had this version at this other yum cha joint at raffles city but they have since closed so discovering it at kam boat was really a treat! the scallop cheong fun was the other refreshing change to the normal shrimp and char siew ones. the scallops added a nice sweet crunch to the already freshly steamed rice rolls, producing a nice flavour that normal shrimp cheong fun can't quite really achieve.
i recommend heading to kam boat to enjoy some of their specialties as well as just to get away from the usual crowds at the usual yum cha joints.
