hawker rocker one one five - go chives!

ask any soon kway or gu chai kway fan for recommendations of their favorite stalls and i'm sure poh cheu will be one of the places they would urge you to visit...ok i do admit that poh cheu is more known by the local folk for their ang ku kways, but this girl has to rave about their gu chai kways just because its hard to find places in singapore that serves them quite the way poh cheu does...fresh and homemade!

crystal smooth skin encasing freshly steamed chives or bamboo shoots pretty much sums up these classic hokkien/teochew snacks. served with a touch of sweet sauce and a dollop of homemade sambal, these dumplings are so good that you really cannot just have one! the constant queue and stack of takeaway packets carted off by happy buyers are really the true testament of how good and how established poh cheu is.

the wait is most definitely worth it so don't be discouraged by the lines...it does move fast and don't fret if you see the kways disappearing off the counters before your turn....they've got a whole old school operation going on with one aunty rolling out the dough, another uncle filling them up with peanut or red bean, another pushing one tray into the steamer and pulling another out. standing in line just watching them work is a treat in itself! so if you are ever in the region or craving a good homemade chive dumpling, poh cheu's definitely the place to head to, and remember to take your place in line and take the whole makings of your potential buy in!
