the triple one edition of hawker rocker goes out to the three number one must tries at the bedok corner. having spent almost a full year living just a walking distance away, i literally had the yummy servings from the corner easily two to three times each month..and yes, each time almost always consisted of dishes from either one or all of three stalls!
so the little corner hawker centre gets my vote for number one (and i dare say in the whole of singapore!) for tahu telur, cuttlefish kang kong and for cheng tng. not being a huge fan of most things deep fried, the tahu telur from this ma chik makes me throw my no deep fried food rule out of the window! prepared and only fried upon your order, it might be a slight wait but rest assured it will most definitely be worth it. think crispy eggy batter enveloping freshly fried tofu...crispy on the outside, smooth on the inside and to top it all off, garnished with a yummy sweet sauce, splash of nuts and fresh cucumbers and bean sprouts. yum!
the owner of the fabulous ye lai xiang was actually our neighbor when we rented in bedok...and i guess neighbors did have its privileges for we were recognized and many a time saved from having to withstand the long queues! but like the telur, both the cuttlefish kang kong and cheng tng are most definitely worth the queue. yes, its two stalls run by brothers i think and both are top notch. the 'jer hir eng chye' is done perfectly with freshly blanched kangkong and truly al dente strips of cuttlefish, covered with a secret mix of sweet sauces and a generous helping of crushed peanuts.
the cheng tng is equally 'power' with not only the options for the usual hot and cold versions, but more importantly, also had the upsize version or better known by the regulars as the 'special'. a bowl full of awesome treasures, from gingko to pumpkin, orange peel to huge sago pearls, this is the perfect sweet antidote for cool a fiery tummy or just to cool down on hot singapore day!
tahu telur (sorry don't have the name of the stall....will figure it out and update!)
